The Tactical Conflict Over System & Ideology

A Modern Soccer Hierarchy: Directors Above Managers

This represents a shift that is becoming prevalent in top-tier football. For decades, clubs foolishly delegated big footballing decisions to subordinate staff such as coaches, talent spotters – players themselves. Maybe previously possible for an up-and-coming, innovative manager with ideas and energy to go into a club and implement their plan supported to fruition. Yet how many companies have these guys set up? What number of large-scale layoffs have they managed? Far preferable to invest genuine authority where it belongs: the leadership tier, the open-necked shirt brigade, the individuals with impressive professional resumes. Better by far to decide the strategy in the boardroom and hire a coach who will adapt their offering accordingly. If coaches were once chefs, they have become more like delivery personnel: not creating the food, but still finally accountable if it arrives poorly or fails to meet standards.

Nowadays, their job is increasingly not about crafting the philosophy and more about marketing it: the receptionist on the front desk, the visible figurehead for a club they can do little to change. A coach at Chelsea leads a team of very young players into the Champions League and secures domestic cups, and effectively is dismissed for speaking out. A manager at Celtic finds his reputation ruined while those individuals who hired him continue to make errors another day.

The Modern Corporate Football: Responsibility for the Coaches

And perhaps on some microcosmic level this is simply neoliberalism at work: the elevation of a gilded elite who are infallible, whose decisions are always untouchable, whose mistakes can invariably be sacked away without justification. Appoint the 3-4-3 coach only to dismiss him for using too much 3-4-3. Hire the project manager and then bin them for taking excessive time. And most importantly show gratitude; for the incremental season ticket price rises, for your new player acquisitions, for the reality that the grownups – regardless of their expertise – are in charge.
